Whitbread defended its recently announced five-year plan after criticism from shareholder Corvex Management, saying it aims to deliver stronger returns. The plan, following a strategic review, includes capital reallocation, replacing remaining branded restaurants, reducing capital programmes in the UK and Germany, increasing cost savings, selling selected freehold properties, and expanding room capacity by FY31.
Corvex urged the board to initiate a public sale process by hiring an independent investment bank, suspend non-plan growth capital expenditure and proposed sale-leasebacks during any process, and prioritise returning free cash flow via an accelerated share repurchase. Separately, an institutional investor commentary stated that recent UK budget initiatives are expected to impact Whitbread’s cost base.
