Exceptionally fast & easy to use
ShareScope’s one-click navigation is a genuine innovation. There are up to 11 data sets associated with each share and you can access them all with a single click of the mouse. To find a share, simply start typing its name. To scan through a list of shares, simply press the spacebar. ShareScope is designed to make your research fast and effective.
There is no faster way to find trading opportunities - so you have time to choose the most persuasive trades and still get in before the crowd.
And with an almost unlimited range of alarms or chart filters (scanners) you can leave the searching up to ShareScope and be confident that you haven’t missed the best trades.
Equity research
The key to successful investing is picking the very best opportunities. So why is it so hard to directly compare investment opportunities quickly and easily?
Some investors like to follow share tips. Coverage of companies in the press is largely driven by news, interim trading updates or results. So just because a share is tipped as a Buy doesn’t mean it is the Best Buy in its sector. With ShareScope it will take just seconds to compare a company with its sector peers using a wide range of performance data.
![]() |
Many investors prefer to uncover their own “tips” rather than rely on journalists and pundits.
There are over 13,500 stocks listed in the UK and US and many are not very closely followed by the City analysts or the press. Consequently there is ample opportunity to discover undervalued gems or companies with potential for massive growth – the next “ten-bagger”.
Company results and the many performance ratios derived from a company’s financial statements are referred to as "fundamentals". Novice investors usually start with simpler fundamental metrics such as profits, dividend yield, price/earnings ratio (P/E) and earnings per share (EPS). More sophisticated investors may study more in-depth financial measures such as cashflow, liquidity, net asset value (NAV), gearing (degree of borrowing) and return on capital employed (ROCE).
ShareScope provides detailed fundamentals for all companies listed in London and the US.
- Up to 19 years history for UK companies and 8 years for US stocks
- Normalised results to remove exceptional items
- Advanced balance sheet, profit & loss and cashflow metrics
- Broker forecasts and consensus ratings
- Market and sector ranking to compare peers
- Director and major shareholder dealings
- Key reporting and ex-dividend dates
Experienced investors may also use ShareScope’s correlation and volatility data for each company to manage the risk profile of their portfolio.
Whichever approach you take, ShareScope will help you decide which are the most attractive investments.
Fund research
Many investors want exposure to emerging markets and other other themes or asset classes such as sectors, commodities and bonds. In many cases, the only way for private investors to achieve this is through collective instruments such as unit trusts, OEICs, investment trusts and ETFs. You can find information for these products on the internet but nowhere can you easily compare the relative costs and performance of these instruments.
For example, your ISA or SIPP provider will bombard you with information about their heavily discounted unit trusts and OEICs but you won’t hear them tell you about some of the superb investment trusts covering the same markets.
In ShareScope, you can quickly and easily filter funds and investment trusts by sector (e.g. Far East exc. Japan) and compare costs and performance over any time frames.
Example: You want to gain exposure to the Far East ex Japan market
- Quickly isolate the relevant unit trusts, OEICs and investments trusts by filtering for the relevant AIC or IMA sector. Save these instruments to a watchlist.
- Add the relevant ETFs (e.g. iShares MSCI AC Far East ex-Japan) and benchmark indices (e.g. Hang Seng) to the watchlist.
- Compare their discrete, cumulative and relative performance over various timescales and other relevant information such as TERs, liquidity and yields to identify the most attractive investments.
- You can also chart the relative performance of the most attractive investments.
- Within minutes, you have identified a shortlist of the most attractive investments which can be researched further in greater depth.
Fundamental data you can rely on
All historical financial data comes from company reports which means it is either directly reported or interpreted. Unlike many services, ShareScope provides normalised data which removes exceptional items. This enables you to compare companies on a level playing field. We also provide the unadjusted numbers. ShareScope has always carried the very best normalised data from Hemscott. You’d be surprised how much results data and ratios can vary from one service to another. As a ShareScope customer, you’ll be confident that you can trust the investment opportunities you identify with ShareScope.
Stock screening
Investment strategies that keep finding you attractive stocks
You simply don’t need to scrutinise company results in order to build a shortlist of companies that look like interesting opportunities. ShareScope’s powerful and lightning-fast Data Mining will scan the entire market for you. Just enter the criteria you are looking for and hey presto, you have a shortlist to research further. If the list of matching companies is too long or too short, simply refine your criteria until you are happy with the results. You’ll see the changes instantaneously. (Watch a short video here.)
With in-depth company results, performance ratios and forecasts for all UK-listed stocks you can filter for the simplest or the most demanding of performance criteria. Not only that but ShareScope’s results are normalised which means that exceptional items are removed so you know that you are comparing like with like.
And that's not all - ShareScope also includes company results for all US-listed equities expanding your searchable universe by 11,000 companies!
Whoever your investment gurus are, ShareScope makes it easy to emulate their successful strategies. Not only that, you can adapt these strategies to discover your own winning approach.
For example, you may wish to find companies that meet Ben Graham’s deep value criteria or Jim Slater’s Growth at a Reasonable Price (GARP). You could create filters that try to emulate Warren Buffett, Peter Lynch, Joseph Piotrowski, Jeremy Siegel, Joel Greenblatt, Martin Zweig and James O’Shaughnessy to name but a few.
You can also introduce technical criteria to find momentum plays or to introduce a measure of market timing into your filters.
Your filters are also updated automatically every day to reflect the latest results or changes to consensus broker forecasts.
If you are a ShareScope Plus or Pro user, you can even utilise ShareScope’s scripting language to create custom analyses for use in your stock screens.
Market Timing
Increasingly, long-term investors use technical analysis techniques to time their transactions. If you have decided to buy or sell an instrument, a basic understanding of trend theory and momentum indicators such as moving averages, MACD and RSI can help you squeeze extra profit from your trades. All versions of ShareScope include easy to use charts and technical analysis tools.
The price chart below for Barclays exhibits so called "divergence" between the share price and momentum indicators – a signal which often precedes a price rise. A would-be buyer of Barclays might decide to buy now so as not to miss out on the price rise; a would-be seller might decide to wait in the hope of a better price.

Bid/offer prices, spreads and trades
Investors who subscribe to ShareScope Pro will benefit from seeing the live bid and offer prices as well as the spread (the % difference between the bid and offer prices). This is particularly important when buying or selling less liquid instruments such as small cap shares or ETFs. Spreads on these instruments can be off-putting. With some instruments, however, the spread can vary during the day so looking at the chart for the current day or previous days can help you identify whether or not a wide spread is likely to narrow.
See the example below: the spread of the ETF (the white band) varies from as wide as 5% in early trading to a more regular 0.5% for much of the day.

ShareScope Plus subscribers can also see this data. Although it will be 15-minutes delayed you will still get an idea of spread variation and be able to compare it to the prices offered by your broker.
Portfolio management
ShareScope’s portfolio management tools offer much more than just a list of your holdings – after all, you can get that from your online broking account.
- You can create multiple portfolios including Group portfolios which will summarise the holdings and performance of related portfolios. You can also organise your portfolios into directories.
- You can record all purchases and sales including broker commission, stamp duty and any other fees. You can retrospectively record the transactions for existing portfolios.
- All transactions are treated separately – an annoying feature of many broker accounts is that they lump all purchases of the same instrument into one holding. ShareScope will also display a summary position for each instrument.
- You can create multiple cash accounts to help manage different sources of cash and include unused cash in the valuation of your portfolios.
- Portfolios will tell you the profit/loss position of each holding, your average cost for each share or fund, and your capital gains tax liability – both realised and potential.
- You can ask ShareScope to automatically include paid dividends into your portfolios (or you can treat them manually on an ad hoc basis). You can also add in dividends retrospectively – for example if you have transcribed an existing portfolio into ShareScope, or simply been away for few months.
- You can print dividend reports and tax reports to help complete your tax return. You can factor in a spouses allowance.
- You can graph the value or profit of each portfolio and benchmark it against a relevant index.
- You can determine the value of a portfolio on a specific date.
- For equity portfolios you can manage diversification by viewing a breakdown by sector or market capitalisation.
"I would like to thank ShareScope for the capital gains tax service it provides...
I have just had my accounts approved by the IR and it was all calculated and
printed by ShareScope. I have looked at most of the current tax software providers,
but none are as good as ShareScope"
